Summary
Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) is an independent risk factor for papillary thyroid cancer (PTC). Patients with HT, especially nodular HT, require careful observation and potential fine needle aspiration biopsy for early detection of PTC.
Area of Science:
- Endocrinology
- Oncology
- Pathology
Background:
- Papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) is the most common type of thyroid malignancy.
- Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) is a common autoimmune thyroid disease.
- The association between HT and PTC requires further investigation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT).
Main Methods:
- Retrospective study over 7 years including patients who underwent thyroidectomy.
- Assessment of patient demographics, biochemical, radiological, and pathological results.
- Statistical analysis to determine associations and risk factors.
Main Results:
- Of 469 patients, 132 (28.1%) had malignant tumors, and 182 (38.8%) had HT.
- HT prevalence was significantly higher in PTC patients (54.9%) compared to non-PTC patients (33.1%).
- HT was an independent risk factor for PTC development (OR: 2.2), but not associated with TNM stage or recurrence. Younger age was also associated with PTC.
Conclusions:
- Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an independent risk factor for the development of papillary thyroid cancer.
- Patients with HT, particularly nodular HT, warrant close monitoring.
- Encouraging thyroid fine needle aspiration biopsy (TFNAB) in HT patients may be beneficial for early PTC detection.
