Blinding01:11

Blinding

2.5K
Blinding is a commonly used method of not telling participants which treatment a subject is receiving. Blinding is a critical part of a randomized control trial or RCT. It reduces the bias that affects the results. In an RCT, blinding is used in the form of a placebo. A placebo effect occurs when untreated subjects falsely believe they have received the treatment and report improved symptoms. A placebo or a dummy treatment is administered to subjects to negate the bias caused by such an effect.

Clinical Trials01:16

Clinical Trials

7.0K
Clinical trials are prospective experimental studies conducted on humans to determine the safety and efficacy of treatments, drugs, diet methods, and medical devices. Using statistics in clinical trials enables researchers to derive reasonable and accurate conclusions from the collected data, allowing them to make wise decisions in uncertain situations. In medical research, statistical methods are crucial for preventing errors and bias.
There are four phases in a clinical trial. A phase one...

The Placebo Effect01:54

The Placebo Effect

6.3K
The placebo effect occurs when people's expectations or beliefs influence or determine their experience in a given situation. In other words, simply expecting something to happen can actually make it happen.

Clinical Trials: Overview

3.3K
Clinical development focuses on how the drug will interact with the human body and encompasses four key phases of clinical trials, each serving a specific purpose in assessing the safety and effectiveness of new drugs. These phases overlap and build upon one another. Phase I involves a small group of healthy volunteers (typically 20-80 individuals) or, in cases where significant toxicity is expected, patients with the targeted disease, such as cancer or AIDS. The volunteers are tested for...

Blind Procedures02:07

Blind Procedures

11.5K
Ideally, the people who observe and record the children’s behavior are unaware of who was assigned to the experimental or control group, in order to control for experimenter bias. Experimenter bias refers to the possibility that a researcher’s expectations might skew the results of the study. Remember, conducting an experiment requires a lot of planning, and the people involved in the research project have a vested interest in supporting their hypotheses. If the observers knew which...

What is an Experiment?01:12

What is an Experiment?

12.1K
An experiment is a planned activity carried out under controlled conditions. The purpose of an experiment is to investigate the relationship between two variables. When one variable causes change in another, we call the first variable the explanatory or independent variable. The affected variable is called the response or dependent variable. In a randomized experiment, the researcher manipulates values of the explanatory variable and measures the resulting changes in the response variable. The...

Area of Science:

  • Health policy research
  • Behavioral economics
  • Public health interventions

Background:

  • Hundreds of thousands fail to complete Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace enrollment annually, leading to coverage gaps.
  • Low-cost interventions are needed to improve health insurance enrollment rates.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effectiveness of low-cost ($0.55 per person) letters in increasing health insurance enrollment.
  • To determine if behavioral science principles in mailings can boost ACA marketplace completion rates.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized clinical trial involving 744,910 individuals who started but did not complete ACA marketplace enrollment.
  • Participants were randomized to a control group or one of eight letter variants based on behavioral science.
  • The primary outcome measured was the health insurance enrollment rate post-intervention.

Main Results:

  • The pooled treatment group showed a 4.3% enrollment rate, a statistically significant increase of 0.3 percentage points (95% CI, 0.2-0.4) compared to the 4.0% control group.
  • Letters using action-oriented language demonstrated greater impact, especially for Black and Hispanic individuals in Medicaid expansion states.
  • The intervention yielded an estimated 1,753 marginal enrollments.

Conclusions:

  • Behaviorally informed letters represent a cost-effective strategy to enhance ACA marketplace enrollment.
  • Further research is recommended to optimize messaging, particularly in light of the American Rescue Plan.
