Anaerobic spondylodiscitis, a rare cause of spinal infection, often presents without fever and can have atypical imaging. Postoperative infections have a higher recurrence rate than hematogenous ones.
Area of Science:
- Infectious Diseases
- Spinal Surgery
- Radiology
Background:
- Anaerobic spondylodiscitis is a rare but serious spinal infection.
- This study investigates its clinical features and outcomes.
Purpose of the Study:
- To analyze the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with anaerobic spondylodiscitis.
- To identify risk factors and treatment outcomes.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective analysis of nine patients with anaerobic spondylodiscitis (2003-2017).
- Data collected included clinical presentation, causative pathogens, imaging findings, and treatment outcomes.
Main Results:
- Anaerobic spondylodiscitis accounted for 2.4% of infectious spondylodiscitis cases, predominantly affecting females.
- Common pathogen: Bacteroides fragilis. Atypical radiographic findings were noted in hematogenous cases.
- Higher eradication rate (100%) in hematogenous vs. postoperative infections (0%).
Conclusions:
- Diagnostic delays can occur due to atypical presentations (back pain without fever) and imaging.
- Postoperative anaerobic spinal infections have a higher recurrence rate.
