Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between osteocalcin levels and depressive symptoms during treatment.
  • To explore osteocalcin as a potential objective biomarker for depression.

Main Methods:

  • Female inpatients with moderate depressive episodes were included.
  • Depression severity was measured using the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS).
  • Osteocalcin levels were assessed pre-treatment and after 6 weeks, analyzed with mixed-effect and linear models.

Main Results:

  • Osteocalcin levels significantly decreased in 11 out of 13 patients during the 6-week treatment period.
  • This decrease was significantly associated with a reduction in depressive symptom severity.
  • Initial osteocalcin levels did not predict treatment response.

  • Further investigation into osteocalcin's role in depression and treatment is warranted.
