    Summary

Women exhibit significantly slower gastric emptying rates for both solid and liquid meals compared to men. This study investigated sex-based differences in stomach emptying times.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Physiology

    Background:

    • Gastric emptying, the process by which food leaves the stomach, is crucial for nutrient absorption and digestive health.
    • Understanding factors influencing gastric emptying, such as sex, is important for nutritional and medical research.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate and compare the rates of gastric emptying for solid and liquid meals between adult men and women.
    • To determine if statistically significant differences exist in gastric emptying times based on sex.

    Main Methods:

    • A standardized meal (beef stew and orange juice) was administered to 15 men and 15 women.
    • Gastric emptying rates were measured using Technetium-99m (99mTc) labeled liver pate for solids and Indium-111 DTPA (111InDTPA) for liquids.
    • Scintillation camera and computer analysis, with corrections for radionuclide depth, decay, and crosstalk, were employed.

    Main Results:

    • Women demonstrated significantly longer half-emptying times for solids (92.4 min vs. 59.8 min) and liquids (53.8 min vs. 30.3 min) compared to men.
    • Statistical analysis confirmed these differences (solids, p = 0.00097; liquids, p = 0.00038).

    Conclusions:

    • Women exhibit slower gastric emptying of both solid and liquid components of a meal compared to men.
    • The findings suggest sex-based physiological differences in gastric motility that warrant further investigation into underlying mechanisms.
