    Summary

A splenic arteriovenous fistula (AVF) developed after spleen removal due to trauma. This postsplenectomy complication was successfully treated using intravascular coils, preventing serious liver and esophageal issues.

    Area of Science:

    • Vascular Surgery
    • Interventional Radiology
    • Trauma Surgery

    Background:

    • Splenic arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) are rare vascular anomalies.
    • They can result from trauma, aneurysm rupture, or iatrogenic injury.
    • Post-splenectomy AVFs present a unique clinical challenge.

    Observation:

    • A patient developed a splenic AVF following splenectomy for blunt abdominal trauma.
    • The fistula was identified during the postoperative period.
    • The condition was managed non-surgically.

    Findings:

    • The postsplenectomy splenic AVF was diagnosed and treated effectively with intravascular coil embolization.
    • This interventional radiology technique provided successful fistula closure.
    • No immediate complications were reported post-embolization.

    Implications:

    • Early diagnosis and endovascular management of postsplenectomy AVFs are crucial.
    • Successful treatment prevents serious sequelae such as hepatosclerosis and esophageal varices.
    • This case highlights the importance of recognizing AVFs in the post-trauma, post-surgical setting.
