Area of Science:

  • Oncology Nursing
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Colorectal cancer (CRC) prevention requires multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
  • Nurses are integral to patient care across all levels of prevention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the diverse roles of nurses in primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention of colorectal cancer.
  • To identify factors influencing the effective fulfillment of these nursing roles.

Main Methods:

  • A comprehensive narrative review of 117 studies was conducted.
  • Searches were performed across major scientific databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, etc.) up to 2021.
  • Studies included quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods research.

Main Results:

  • Primary prevention: Nurses educate the public on cancer prevention and risk reduction.
  • Secondary prevention: Roles include genetic counseling, screening tests (stool, sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy), follow-ups, and chemotherapy.
  • Tertiary prevention: Focuses on pre/post-operative care, rehabilitation, and palliative/end-of-life care.

Conclusions:

  • Nurses function as educators, coordinators, screening facilitators, and care providers across the continuum of colorectal cancer prevention.
  • Gaps in role fulfillment are often linked to insufficient nurse knowledge, competence, training, or legal support.
  • Enhanced clinical knowledge and experience are essential for nurses to effectively perform their roles in colorectal cancer prevention.
