    Summary

Adiabatic inversion radiofrequency (RF) pulses can be transformed into refocusing pulses. These modified pulses maintain stability against RF field variations and are useful for surface coil imaging.

    Area of Science:

    • Magnetic Resonance Imaging
    • Radiofrequency Pulse Design

    Background:

    • Adiabatic inversion radiofrequency (RF) pulses are crucial for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) experiments.
    • These pulses are sensitive to variations in RF field strength, limiting their application in certain scenarios.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To convert adiabatic 180-degree inversion RF pulses into 180-degree refocusing pulses.
    • To develop RF pulses that are insensitive to large RF field variations and cover a reasonable spectral width.

    Main Methods:

    • Inverting the effective magnetic field midway through the adiabatic pulse sequence.
    • Designing and simulating the modified RF pulse profiles.

    Main Results:

    • The converted pulses effectively act as 180-degree refocusing pulses.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • The modified pulses demonstrate robustness against significant changes in RF field strength.
  • The pulses operate effectively over a practical spectral width.
  • Conclusions:

    • Adiabatic inversion pulses can be readily adapted into robust refocusing pulses.
    • These novel pulses offer improved performance for MRI techniques, particularly those using surface coils.
