Summary

This study developed new Dutch speech audiometry tests using phonemically balanced consonant-vowel-consonant word lists. These validated lists improve audiological assessments for Flemish adults in quiet and noisy environments.

Background:

  • Speech audiometry is vital for clinical audiology and research.
  • Current Dutch speech audiometry relies on limited, short consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) word lists.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a new set of phonemically balanced CVC word lists for adult speech audiometry in Dutch (Flemish).
  • To meet the ISO 8253-3:2012 standard for speech audiometry test materials.
  • To establish reference speech recognition curves in quiet and noise.

Main Methods:

  • Compiled a pool of 689 well-known Dutch CVC words.
  • Created initial lists and recorded them with a female speaker.
  • Optimized lists for perceptual balance through studies with young normal-hearing listeners (N1=24, N2=32).
  • Determined reference speech recognition curves in quiet and noise with a final group (N3=25).

Main Results:

  • Developed 16 phonetically and perceptually balanced CVC word lists.
  • Established reference speech recognition thresholds: 20.3 dB SPL in quiet (slope 5.2%/dB).
  • Established reference speech recognition thresholds in noise: -7.7 dB SNR (slope 7.5%/dB).
  • Results are comparable to existing speech audiometry materials.

  • The newly developed Dutch speech audiometry lists are phonetically balanced and perceptually optimized.
  • These lists provide a valuable addition to existing audiological assessment tools for Flemish adults.
  • The established reference curves aid in interpreting speech recognition performance in various listening conditions.
