This systematic review recommends Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for adults and Caregiver intervention for children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Evidence did not support other psychosocial interventions for core ADHD symptoms across all age groups.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Clinical Psychology
- Evidence-Based Medicine
Background:
- Numerous psychosocial interventions exist for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) symptoms.
- Clear guidelines for utilizing these interventions across diverse populations are lacking.
Purpose of the Study:
- To systematically review and meta-analyze recent evidence to generate recommendations for psychosocial interventions targeting core ADHD symptoms.
- To provide evidence-based guidance for clinicians and researchers.
Main Methods:
- Systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and meta-analyses (MAs) published between 2010 and February 2020.
- Searched multiple databases (PubMed, PsycINFO, EMBASE, EBM Reviews, CINAHL).
- Excluded studies with significant comorbidities; employed three-level and four-level meta-analyses; used the GRADE approach for recommendations.
Main Results:
- Included 31 studies for qualitative synthesis (22 RCTs, 9 MAs) and 24 for quantitative synthesis (19 RCTs, 5 MAs).
- Strong evidence supports recommendations for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in adults and Caregiver Intervention for children with ADHD.
- Insufficient data precluded recommendations for other psychosocial interventions across preschool, child, adolescent, and adult populations.
Conclusions:
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is recommended for adults with ADHD.
- Caregiver Intervention is recommended for children with ADHD.
- Further research is needed to establish recommendations for other psychosocial interventions and populations.
