This study introduces SMTrust, a novel secure routing protocol for the Internet of Things (IoT) that enhances security by considering node mobility. SMTrust effectively defends against rank and blackhole attacks in dynamic IoT networks.
Area of Science:
- Computer Science
- Network Security
- Internet of Things (IoT)
Background:
- The Routing Protocol for Low Power and Lossy Networks (RPL) is vulnerable to various attacks in IoT environments.
- Existing trust-based security solutions for RPL often neglect or inadequately address node mobility.
- There is a need for security protocols that are effective in mobile IoT settings against RPL-specific attacks.
Purpose of the Study:
- To propose a novel trust and mobility-based secure routing protocol, SMTrust, for resource-constrained IoT environments.
- To enhance security against RPL Rank and Blackhole attacks by incorporating mobility metrics.
- To evaluate the performance of SMTrust in diverse IoT network scenarios, including mobile nodes.
Main Methods:
- Developed SMTrust by integrating trust metrics with mobility-based analysis for RPL security.
- Evaluated SMTrust in static and mobile IoT network scenarios.
- Compared SMTrust against RPL's Minimum Rank with Hysteresis Objective Function (MRHOF), SecTrust, DCTM, and MRTS.
Main Results:
- SMTrust demonstrated superior performance in terms of reduced packet loss rate and improved throughput.
- The proposed protocol achieved enhanced topology stability in mobile IoT environments.
- Validation confirmed SMTrust's adherence to routing protocol requirements like consistency, optimality, and loop-freeness.
Conclusions:
- SMTrust offers a robust security solution for RPL in mobile IoT networks, effectively mitigating attacks.
- The integration of mobility metrics significantly enhances the security and stability of trust-based routing protocols.
- SMTrust provides a reliable and efficient routing mechanism for dynamic IoT ecosystems.
