    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To formulate and measure the psychological construct of Emotional Reactivity (ER).
    • To investigate the relationship between ER and elevated blood pressure (BP).
    • To examine demographic differences in ER among study participants.

    Main Methods:

    • Developed and validated a reliable scale to measure ER.
    • Recruited 837 subjects, categorized into control and elevated BP groups (systolic ≥ 140 mmHg or diastolic ≥ 90 mmHg).
    • Included subjects on antihypertensive medication in BP groups.

    Main Results:

    • Subjects with elevated systolic BP (SBP) demonstrated significantly higher ER scores than controls.
    • Elevated SBP was associated with higher ER in both males and females.
    • Females over 40 with elevated SBP showed particularly high ER scores.
