Parental Care00:55

Parental Care

11.9K
Many animals exhibit parental care behavior, including feeding, grooming, and protecting young offspring. Parental care is universal in mammals and birds, which often have young that are born relatively helpless. Several species of insects and fish, as well as some amphibians, also care for their young.

Ovarian Cycle01:27

Ovarian Cycle

1.7K
The menstrual cycle includes a critical component known as the ovarian cycle, which undergoes two main phases each month—the follicular phase and the luteal phase. The follicular phase is variable and averaging around 14 days. Ovulation, triggered by a surge in luteinizing hormone (LH), marks the transition between the two phases. The second phase, the luteal phase, is relatively consistent, lasting approximately 14 days, and is marked by the activity of the corpus luteum. While a cycle...

Pathophysiology of Diabetes01:20

Pathophysiology of Diabetes

1.2K
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia. The four categories of diabetes are type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, other specific types of diabetes, and gestational diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes is characterized by autoimmune-mediated destruction of pancreatic β cells, with environmental factors potentially triggering this process in genetically susceptible individuals. Despite many not having a family history, certain genes increase susceptibility,...

Fetal Circulation01:14

Fetal Circulation

1.3K
Fetal circulation is a unique system that facilitates the exchange of gases, nutrients, and waste products between the developing fetus and the mother. This intricate process takes place through a special organ called the placenta.
Two umbilical arteries transport blood from the fetus to the placenta. At the placenta, the blood absorbs oxygen and nutrients while simultaneously eliminating waste products. This oxygen-enriched and nutrient-rich blood then returns to the fetus through one...

Development of Immunocompetence01:22

Development of Immunocompetence

426
The initiation of cell-mediated immunity can be observed as early as the third month of fetal growth, with active antibody-mediated immunity following approximately one month later.
The initial cells that migrate from the fetal thymus settle within the skin and epithelial tissues lining the mouth, digestive tract, and in females, the uterus and vagina. These cells, including skin-based dendritic cells, serve as antigen-presenting cells, playing a key role in T cell activation.
Subsequent T...

Attachment01:20

Attachment

124
Attachment is vital for infant development, as warm social interactions support growth and well-being. In a classic 1958 study by Harry Harlow, the significance of warmth and comfort in forming attachments was examined. Harlow separated newborn monkeys from their mothers and provided two artificial "mothers": one made of cold wire and the other covered in soft cloth. Despite the wire mother offering food, the infant monkeys preferred the comfort of the cloth mother, demonstrating that...

Area of Science:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Maternal-Fetal Medicine
  • Perinatal Psychology

Background:

  • Childbirth experiences can differ significantly between twin and singleton pregnancies.
  • Understanding maternal perceptions is crucial for improving obstetric care.
  • Identifying factors influencing childbirth satisfaction is essential for patient-centered outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the childbirth experiences of mothers with twin births versus singleton births.
  • To identify risk factors associated with negative childbirth experiences in the general obstetric population.

Main Methods:

  • Matched case-control study comparing diamniotic twin deliveries (≥35 weeks gestation, planned vaginal birth) with singleton controls.
  • Data collected using the Childbirth Experience Questionnaire (CEQ) six weeks postpartum.
  • 72 twin mothers and 126 singleton mothers completed the questionnaire.

Main Results:

  • Overall childbirth experience for twin mothers was positive, comparable to singleton mothers.
  • Twin mothers reported significantly less opportunity to choose their birthing position (p < 0.001).
  • Intrapartum cesarean section was a risk factor for negative childbirth experiences; high satisfaction with midwifery care was noted.

Conclusions:

  • Planned vaginal twin birth is associated with a positive maternal experience.
  • While birth position choice was limited for twin mothers, overall experiences were similar to singletons.
  • Midwifery care satisfaction was high across both groups.
