Improving the nursing work environment is crucial for fostering compassionate care in intensive care units (ICUs). A positive work environment and manageable patient-to-nurse ratios are linked to higher levels of nurse compassion.
Area of Science:
- Nursing
- Healthcare Management
- Patient Care
Background:
- Compassionate care is integral to nursing identity and patient well-being.
- Intensive care units (ICUs) present unique challenges for delivering compassionate care due to high patient acuity and pain.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between the nursing work environment and nurses' compassion in ICUs.
- To identify factors within the work environment that influence the delivery of compassionate care.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 235 nurses from four educational hospitals.
- Data were collected using demographic questionnaires, the Sussex-Oxford Compassion for Others Scale (SOCS-O), and the Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index (PES-NWI).
Main Results:
- A significant inverse relationship was found between the patient per nurse ratio and nurses' compassion scores (P < .05).
- A significant positive correlation existed between the overall nursing work index score and compassion for others (r = 0.16, P = .016).
Conclusions:
- Enhancing the nursing work environment is essential for promoting compassionate care in ICUs.
- Healthcare leaders should address organizational barriers to compassionate care and prioritize improvements in the work environment.
