Summary

Gender differences exist in traumatic brain injury (TBI) incidence and causes. However, TBI severity, outcomes, and mortality rates are comparable between males and females, with age being a factor in male mortality.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate gender-based discrepancies in the incidence, injury characteristics, and outcomes of traumatic brain injury (TBI).
  • To analyze the influence of gender on the mechanism of injury (MOI) and TBI type.
  • To compare the severity, hospital course, and mortality rates between male and female TBI patients.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective analysis of the Qatar Trauma Registry (QTR) database was performed.
  • Data from patients aged 14 years and older admitted with TBI between 2014 and 2019 were analyzed.
  • Statistical comparisons were made based on gender, age, MOI, TBI type, injury severity, and outcomes including mortality.

Main Results:

  • Over a 5-year period, 1,620 TBI patients were identified, with males comprising 94%.
  • Motor vehicle crashes were the primary MOI for females, while falls from height predominated in males.
  • Subdural hematoma was the most common TBI type in both genders. Injury severity, Glasgow Coma Scale, and length of stay were comparable. Mortality rates were similar between genders, although higher in males aged ≥55 years.
  • Gender was not a significant predictor of mortality in TBI patients.

Conclusions:

  • Significant gender differences exist in TBI incidence and the primary mechanisms of injury.
  • Despite differing injury patterns, the overall severity and outcomes of TBI are comparable between males and females.
  • Age is a more significant factor than gender in TBI mortality, particularly in older males.
