Background:

Accredited allied health programs require supervised experiential learning, such as internships, benefiting students and enhancing employability.
Health Information Management (HIM) programs mandate a supervised professional practice experience (PPE) for graduation, ensuring curriculum proficiency.
Limited research exists on the specific challenges of placing and precepting HIM students in hospital settings.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore the challenges and barriers faced by health information management (HIM) preceptors in placing and supervising baccalaureate students in hospital-based HIM departments.
To gain insights into the preceptor's perspective on the professional practice experience (PPE) process.
To identify organizational-level issues impacting student placement and learning.

Main Methods:

A qualitative multi-case study was conducted in 2021 with six HIM preceptors.
Participants completed a pre-interview survey for demographic data.
Semi-structured online interviews were conducted, with survey data informing the interview questions.

Main Results:

HIM preceptors encounter significant challenges in placing and precepting students.
Key barriers include lack of senior leadership support, inadequate planning and preparation, and difficulties in maintaining student engagement.
An anecdotal finding highlighted a lack of formal training for HIM professionals serving as preceptors.

Conclusions:

Organizational-level issues present substantial problems for student placement and precepting in HIM programs.
Despite challenges, preceptors demonstrate strong commitment to their roles.
Creative learning activity delivery and innovative strategies, particularly those developed during the pandemic, offer potential solutions for improving the PPE.
