Summary

Inflammatory conditions of the conjunctiva and ocular surface may trigger ocular mucus membrane pemphigoid (oMMP). Many oMMP patients had prior inflammatory eye conditions, suggesting oMMP can be a secondary condition.

Background:

  • Ocular mucus membrane pemphigoid (oMMP) is a rare autoimmune blistering disease affecting the conjunctiva and ocular surface.
  • The etiology of oMMP is not fully understood, but inflammatory events are suspected triggers.

Approach:

  • A retrospective chart review analyzed 779 patients with biopsy-proven oMMP.
  • The presence of specific inflammatory conditions at diagnosis was recorded.
  • Response to immunomodulatory therapy (IMT) was assessed.

Key Points:

  • Of 507 eligible patients, 154 (30.4%) had at least one pre-existing inflammatory ocular condition.
  • 118 patients (23.3%) had one condition, 35 (6.9%) had two, and 1 had three.
  • Patients with pre-existing conditions showed an 84.9% response rate to IMT.

Conclusions:

  • oMMP may develop secondary to acute or chronic inflammatory events on the conjunctiva and ocular surface.
  • Identifying and managing underlying inflammatory conditions may be crucial for oMMP treatment.
