Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Surgical Simulation
  • Medical Education

Background:

  • Continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis (CCC) is a critical step in cataract surgery.
  • Existing simulation models can be expensive or inaccessible for some training programs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a low-cost simulation model for practicing anterior lens capsule CCC.
  • To assess the realism and training utility of this novel simulation model.

Main Methods:

  • A CCC simulation model was constructed using readily available, inexpensive materials.
  • Twenty-seven ophthalmologists evaluated the model's realism and training value via a questionnaire and task performance.

Main Results:

  • The model was rated favorably for simulating CCC (mean: 3.5) and comparable to existing models (mean: 3.3).
  • High scores were achieved for overall educational value (mean: 4.00) and enlarging small CCCs (mean: 3.7).
  • The model's utility in practicing management of runaway CCC edges received a mean score of 2.9.

Conclusions:

  • This low-cost model presents a viable alternative for CCC training and practicing anterior lens capsule maneuvers.
  • It is particularly beneficial for residency programs lacking access to advanced simulation technologies.
