Self-Discrepancy Theory02:45

Self-Discrepancy Theory

18.4K
One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.

Stereotypes, Prejudice, and Discrimination

91.0K
Humans are very diverse and although we share many similarities, we also have many differences. The social groups we belong to help form our identities (Tajfel, 1974). These differences may be difficult for some people to reconcile, which may lead to prejudice toward people who are different. Prejudice is a negative attitude and feeling toward an individual based solely on one’s membership in a particular social group (Allport, 1954; Brown, 2010). Prejudice is common against people who...

Erikson's Theory on Socioemotional Development during Adulthood

253
Erik Erikson's theory of psychosocial development outlines a series of stages through which individuals progress across the lifespan. Each stage involves a psychosocial conflict that significantly influences personal growth and well-being. Three key stages — intimacy versus isolation, generativity versus stagnation, and integrity versus despair — highlight the developmental challenges faced in adulthood.

Frustration and Conflict: Avoidance-Avoidance, Double-Approach Avoidance

139
Avoidance-avoidance conflict refers to a psychological situation where a person must choose between two or more unpleasant alternatives. These conflicts are particularly stressful because neither option is desirable. This dilemma is often expressed in sayings like "caught between a rock and a hard place" or "between the devil and the deep blue sea." For instance, individuals who fear dental procedures may find themselves torn between enduring a painful toothache or facing the...

Summary

Chronic pain interference in young adults predicts future job loss and new health limitations. Early pain management can reduce unemployment and disability burdens.

Area of Science:

  • Epidemiology
  • Occupational Health
  • Pain Medicine

Background:

  • Chronic pain significantly impacts workforce participation, yet longitudinal data are scarce.
  • Understanding the long-term work consequences of early-adulthood pain is crucial for public health.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between pain interference in early adulthood and subsequent labor force exit.
  • To examine the predictive relationship between pain interference and the development of new health-related work limitations.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth-1997 cohort.
  • Employed survival analysis to assess labor force exit and new work limitations after age 29.
  • Analyzed self-reported pain interference and employment status over biennial interviews.

Main Results:

  • Any reported pain interference at age 29 predicted increased hazard of labor force exit (HR: 1.26) and new health-related work limitations (HR: 2.45).
  • The group with high pain interference showed significantly higher risks compared to those with no pain.
  • Results were consistent for individuals reporting "a little" or "a lot" of pain interference.

Conclusions:

  • Pain interference in early adulthood is a significant predictor of future labor force exit and work limitations.
  • Early identification and intervention for pain in young workers may mitigate long-term unemployment and disability.
  • Findings highlight the importance of addressing pain as a factor in workforce stability and health.
