Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate how acupuncture modulates brain activity in PDM.
  • To analyze brain activity across multiple frequency bands.
  • To determine the therapeutic effects of acupuncture in PDM.

Main Methods:

  • 47 patients with PDM were randomized into verum and sham acupuncture groups.
  • fMRI scans, VAS scores, and clinical evaluations were performed pre- and post-treatment.
  • Global functional connectivity density (gFCD) was analyzed across different frequency bands (full-low, Slow-3, Slow-4, Slow-5).

Main Results:

  • Verum acupuncture significantly reduced VAS scores in PDM patients (p < 0.05).
  • Frequency-dependent gFCD alterations were observed in verum acupuncture group, notably in DLPFC, somatosensory cortex, ACC, MCC, precuneus, hippocampus, and insula.
  • DLPFC gFCD at Slow-5 band showed negative correlation with PDM symptoms, while S2 at Slow-4 band correlated positively with VAS scores.

Conclusions:

  • Verum acupuncture effectively modulates frequency-dependent gFCD in PDM.
  • Acupuncture influences abnormal DLPFC (Slow-5 band) and hippocampus (Slow-3 band) connectivity.
  • Findings may enhance the clinical application and efficacy of acupuncture for PDM.
