Summary

  • Self-relevant stimuli, such as names and faces, influence cognitive and affective processing.
  • While recently self-associated stimuli affect cognition, their impact on affect remains unexamined.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if recently self-associated stimuli induce an affective bias.
  • To compare the magnitude of this effect with familiar self-associated stimuli.

Main Methods:

  • A Recoding-Free Implicit Association Test (IAT-RF) was employed with 107 participants.
  • Participants categorized familiar words or recently self-associated geometric shapes against neutral objects.
  • Stimuli included self-associated, neutral object-associated, positive, and negative items.

Main Results:

  • Faster response times were observed for congruent trials (positive/self, negative/neutral object) compared to incongruent trials.
  • The effect size for familiar and experimentally induced self-associated stimuli did not significantly differ.

Conclusions:

  • Experimentally induced self-association can rapidly create an affective bias favoring the self-associated stimulus.
  • This suggests that immediate self-association is sufficient to influence affective evaluations.
