Acquired penile epidermoid cysts can develop after penile surgery. Complete excision using existing scars is an effective treatment, preventing new scarring and recurrence.
Area of Science:
- Urology
- Pediatric Surgery
- Dermatology
Background:
- Penile epidermoid cysts are rare conditions.
- Tertiary centers manage these cysts, often as complications of prior penile surgeries.
Purpose of the Study:
- To review the 15-year experience of a tertiary center with penile epidermoid cysts.
- To analyze patient demographics, clinical features, and surgical outcomes.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective review of patient files from 2005-2019.
- Analysis of demographics, cyst characteristics, surgical techniques, complications, and follow-up data.
Main Results:
- 24 cysts were excised in 21 boys; median age was 52 months.
- Common prior surgeries included circumcision (11 cases) and hypospadias repair (10 cases).
- Most presented as asymptomatic penile masses; complete excision via old scars was effective with one recurrence.
Conclusions:
- Acquired penile epidermoid cysts can be early or late complications post-penile surgery.
- Complete excision through existing scars is an effective management strategy, minimizing further scarring.
