[Sacral agenesis associated with a teratoma].

Background:

Sacrococcygeal teratomas are congenital tumors with varying degrees of malignancy.
Sacral agenesis is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by incomplete formation of the sacrum.
The co-occurrence of these two conditions presents unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.

Observation:

A 29-year-old male presented with a large sacrococcygeal teratoma.
Surgical excision of the teratoma was performed successfully.
Radiographic imaging revealed associated anomalies including vertebral fusion (T12-L3), absent left 12th rib, partial sacrococcygeal agenesis, and lumbar scoliosis.

Findings:

The patient's cystometry and myelography results were within normal limits.
A comprehensive literature review did not identify any previously reported cases associating sacrococcygeal teratoma with sacral agenesis.
Embryological factors potentially contributing to this rare association were discussed.

Implications:

This case highlights the importance of thorough imaging and evaluation for associated anomalies in patients with sacrococcygeal teratomas.
Understanding the embryogenesis of these co-occurring conditions may improve diagnostic accuracy and treatment strategies.
Further research into the developmental pathways is warranted to elucidate the etiology of this rare association.
