    Background:

    • Small vessel pathology is a concern in various systemic diseases.
    • Vasectomy and diabetes are known risk factors for vascular complications.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the impact of vasectomy and diabetes, individually and in combination, on small vessel pathology in rhesus monkeys.
    • To assess pathological changes in the heart, kidney, and retina.

    Main Methods:

    • Four groups of rhesus monkeys were studied: sham-vasectomized, vasectomized, sham-vasectomized diabetic, and vasectomized diabetic.
    • Histopathological examination of small vessels (diameter < 60 microns) in the heart, kidney, and retina was performed.

    • Vasectomy and diabetes significantly increased small vessel pathology in the heart muscle, kidney glomeruli, and retina.

    • Specific retinal vascular abnormalities, including microaneurysms and vein distortion, were observed in the vasectomized diabetic group.
    • The ratio of mural to endothelial cells in retinal vessels was altered in diabetic monkeys, with or without vasectomy.

    Conclusions:

    • Combined vasectomy and diabetes exacerbate small vessel pathology in multiple organs.
    • Diabetes alone or vasectomy alone did not induce the observed severe vascular changes.
    • The findings suggest a synergistic negative impact of vasectomy and diabetes on microvascular integrity.
