A social support system is a structured network of personal relationships that provides assistance to individuals facing various challenges, offering a buffer against psychological and physical stressors. This network may consist of family members, friends, neighbors, colleagues, or other community members who provide resources and companionship. Social support can take many forms, including advice, emotional comfort, practical help, and companionship. Research indicates that these networks can...

Stress and Mental Health

202
Chronic stress profoundly affects mental health, significantly influencing mood, behavior, and overall quality of life. Research closely links chronic stress with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders. Ongoing exposure to stress can lead to physiological and psychological changes, initiating a cycle of emotional distress and maladaptive coping mechanisms.
Individuals with depression often experience challenges in both their personal and professional...

Self-Discrepancy Theory

18.4K
One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.

Obedience01:08

Obedience

33.0K
According to obedience research, we may harm others under the forceful pressures of an authority figure (Milgram, 1974). How about if the inappropriate orders were delivered with less force? The increasing interdependence between nurses and physicians compelled Hofling and his colleagues to explore nurses’ reactions to a potentially harmful medical request made by the perceived authority figure, the doctor (Hofling, Brotzman, Dalrymple, Graves, & Pierce, 1966). In this situation,...

Stress Prevention and Stress Management Techniques IV

Stress often leads to unhealthy habits like smoking, excessive drinking, and overeating, which offer short-term relief but ultimately increase long-term health risks. These behaviors create a cycle that temporarily lowers stress levels but can result in severe long-term health consequences. Breaking these habits is essential to reduce the risk of chronic diseases and improve overall well-being. Three primary changes that support better health include quitting smoking, reducing alcohol intake,...

Summary

Lower perceived supervisor support for health (PSSH) significantly increases the risk of presenteeism. Enhancing PSSH is crucial for companies aiming to reduce presenteeism and improve employee well-being.

Area of Science:

  • Occupational Health
  • Organizational Psychology

Background:

  • Presenteeism, or working while unwell, poses significant risks to productivity and employee health.
  • Perceived supervisor support for health (PSSH) is a key factor in the workplace environment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the longitudinal relationship between perceived supervisor support for health (PSSH) and the occurrence of presenteeism.
  • To determine if lower PSSH predicts higher rates of presenteeism one year later.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective cohort study involving 10,718 nonmanagerial employees across seven Japanese companies.
  • Multilevel logistic regression analyses were used to assess the association between baseline PSSH and follow-up presenteeism.

Main Results:

  • Employees with lower PSSH levels exhibited significantly higher odds of presenteeism at follow-up.
  • Odds ratios for high presenteeism were 1.31 for high PSSH, 1.63 for low PSSH, and 2.42 for very low PSSH, compared to very high PSSH.

Conclusions:

  • Reduced perceived supervisor support for health is a predictor of increased presenteeism.
  • Interventions aimed at increasing PSSH are recommended for companies to mitigate presenteeism.
