Community Based Intervention01:30

Community Based Intervention

88
Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.

Observational Studies01:11

Observational Studies

8.8K
Observational studies are a type of analytical study where researchers observe events without any interventions. In other words, the researcher does not influence the response variable or the experiment's outcome.
There are three types of observational studies – Prospective, retrospective, and cross-sectional.
Prospective Study
Prospective studies, also known as longitudinal or cohort studies, are carried out by collecting future data from groups sharing similar characteristics. One...

Longitudinal Research02:20

Longitudinal Research

12.2K
Sometimes we want to see how people change over time, as in studies of human development and lifespan. When we test the same group of individuals repeatedly over an extended period of time, we are conducting longitudinal research. Longitudinal research is a research design in which data-gathering is administered repeatedly over an extended period of time. For example, we may survey a group of individuals about their dietary habits at age 20, retest them a decade later at age 30, and then again...

Operant Conditioning Intervention01:24

Operant Conditioning Intervention

106
Operant conditioning serves as a foundational principle in therapeutic interventions aimed at modifying maladaptive behaviors. Central to this approach is the notion that behaviors, both adaptive and maladaptive, are learned through reinforcement. By analyzing the environmental factors that reinforce problematic behaviors, clinicians can design interventions to weaken these reinforcements and replace maladaptive behaviors with healthier alternatives.
In operant conditioning, behaviors that are...

Longitudinal Studies

Longitudinal studies are also widely used in other medical and social science fields. For instance, in cardiovascular research, they can monitor patients' health over decades to identify risk factors for heart disease, such as high cholesterol or smoking, and evaluate the long-term effectiveness of preventive measures. Similarly, in mental health studies, researchers might follow individuals from adolescence into adulthood to understand the development and progression of conditions like...

Summary

This study shows that a career-mentoring program improved job attitudes and interests in court-ordered youth. The program helped young people develop more pro-social work motivations and realistic career views.

Area of Science:

  • Juvenile Justice
  • Developmental Psychology
  • Career Development

Background:

  • Court-ordered juveniles face significant risk factors for recidivism.
  • Effective career interventions are crucial for this population.
  • Existing programs may not adequately address career development needs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate an innovative career-mentoring program for court-ordered juveniles.
  • To assess the program's impact on recidivism risk factors.
  • To incorporate elements of effective career intervention into juvenile justice programs.

Main Methods:

  • Random assignment of youth to either a mentoring group or treatment-as-usual (TAU) group.
  • The mentoring group received nine structured career-mentoring sessions from university students.
  • The TAU group received standard court-provided programs.

Main Results:

  • The mentoring group demonstrated significantly more pro-social motivations for work compared to the TAU group.
  • Youth in the mentoring group developed more realistic attitudes toward work.
  • Professional job interests were higher in the mentoring group than in the TAU group.
  • Participants in the mentoring group reported positive experiences with their university student mentors.

Conclusions:

  • Structured career-mentoring programs can positively influence work-related attitudes and motivations in court-ordered youth.
  • This intervention shows promise as a cost-effective strategy for supporting juvenile development and potentially reducing recidivism.
  • University-student-led mentoring offers a viable and enjoyable approach for court-involved adolescents.
