Background:

Sibling conflict negatively impacts child development.
Previous research on parenting styles and sibling conflict is inconsistent.
A comprehensive meta-analysis is needed to clarify these relationships.

Approach:

A meta-analysis synthesized data from 16 studies with 14,356 participants.
55 effect sizes were extracted to quantify the relationship between parenting styles and sibling conflict.
Moderator variables including child gender, age, region, and publication year were analyzed.

Key Points:

Authoritative parenting (r = -0.201) was associated with reduced sibling conflict.
Neglectful (r = 0.389), inconsistent (r = 0.364), indulgent (r = 0.293), and authoritarian (r = 0.235) parenting styles were linked to increased sibling conflict.
Parenting styles significantly moderate sibling conflict, with authoritative parenting acting as a protective factor.

Conclusions:

Authoritative parenting is a key protective factor against sibling conflict.
Child gender, age, region, outcome measures, and publication year influence the relationship between parenting and sibling conflict.
Findings offer implications for parenting practices and future research directions.
