Abstract:
Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) is the transfer of genetic material between organisms. It has been known for some time that HGT in eukaryotes is not a rare phenomenon. A recent study by Ma et al. has shown that HGT has played a crucial role in shaping the evolution of land plants.

Genetic transfer occurs when genetic information is passed from one organism to another. It occurs via two mechanisms: vertical gene transfer and horizontal gene transfer. Vertical gene transfer occurs when genetic information is transferred from one generation to the next, which happens much more frequently than horizontal gene transfer.
