    Area of Science:

    • Electrical Engineering
    • Biomedical Engineering
    • Wireless Communications

    Background:

    • Wireless Medical Body Area Networks (WMBAN) enable continuous patient monitoring.
    • Antenna-Body interaction poses challenges for WMBAN system design.
    • Existing solutions may lack robustness or have a large footprint.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To present a robust button sensor antenna (BSA) for WMBAN applications.
    • To design a compact antenna system for both on- and off-body healthcare monitoring.
    • To validate the performance and safety of the proposed BSA design.

    Main Methods:

    • The BSA was designed to operate using the IEEE 802.11b/g/n standard.
    • Simulated and measured antenna parameters, including reflection coefficient (S11) and radiation patterns, were evaluated.
    • Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) values were assessed to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
    • Experimental tests were conducted to determine the maximum read range.

    Main Results:

    • The BSA demonstrated excellent performance with reflection coefficients (S11) as low as -31.12 dB on the body.
    • Omnidirectional radiation patterns were achieved in free space.
    • Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) values remained below regulatory limits (1.6 W/Kg for 1-g and 2.0 W/Kg for 10-g tissues).
    • A maximum wireless coverage range of 40 meters was experimentally validated.

    Conclusions:

    • The developed BSA is a robust and compact solution for WMBAN systems.
    • The antenna design meets performance and safety requirements for healthcare applications.
    • This technology facilitates continuous health monitoring, potentially improving healthcare quality.
