Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze hospital readmissions in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS).
  • To identify predictive characteristics and comorbidities associated with MS patient readmissions.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized the 2017 Nationwide Readmissions Database for querying MS admissions.
  • Examined all patients with nonelective rehospitalization within 30 days of discharge.

Main Results:

  • The 30-day MS readmission rate was 10.6%.
  • Predictive comorbidities for readmission included heart failure, kidney injury, respiratory failure, infections, and others.
  • Female sex was protective; age, neurologic blindness, plasma exchange, and IV immunoglobulin had no effect.

Conclusions:

  • Multiple medical comorbidities significantly predict hospital readmissions in MS patients.
  • Infectious and neurologic causes are primary drivers of MS rehospitalizations.
  • Targeted interventions focused on these etiologies may reduce readmission rates.
