Summary

Greater physical activity (PA) in overweight adults is linked to better blood sugar control. Light and moderate-to-vigorous PA positively impact glycemic health, reducing hyperglycemia and improving time in range.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between physical activity (PA) and glycemic health.
  • To utilize continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) for assessing glycemic health in real-world settings.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty-eight overweight/obese adults wore accelerometers and CGMs for 7 days.
  • Calculated daily PA metrics (light PA, moderate-to-vigorous PA, total PA) and glycemic parameters (mean glucose, variability).

Main Results:

  • Light PA positively correlated with time in glycemic range and negatively with hyperglycemia.
  • Total PA and SD of MVPA/total PA were linked to lower mean glucose concentrations.
  • Most participants showed negative associations between PA and glycemic measures.

Conclusions:

  • Increased total and intensity-specific PA are associated with improved glycemic control (lower mean glucose, more time in range, less hyperglycemia).
  • The unexpected relationship between PA variability and glucose concentrations warrants further investigation.
