    Summary

    Hypothermia increases peripheral nerve blood flow while decreasing flow to muscles and skin in rats. This suggests central, neurally mediated mechanisms regulate nerve blood flow during cooling.

    Background:

    • The impact of hypothermia on peripheral nerve blood flow remains poorly understood.
    • Existing research has not clarified how core body temperature changes affect nerve perfusion.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effects of acute hypothermia on regional blood flow in peripheral nerves.
    • To compare nerve blood flow regulation with that of surrounding muscle and skin tissues during hypothermia.

    Main Methods:

    • Regional blood flow was quantified using fractional distribution of [14C]butanol in anesthetized rats.
    • Comparisons were made between normothermic and hypothermic (28-30°C) conditions.
    • Simultaneous measurements included sciatic nerve, biceps femoris muscle, and thigh skin blood flow, with and without localized limb cooling.
