    Summary

Psychiatrists should consider multiple sclerosis (MS) in patients with persistent depressive or hysterical symptoms. Early recognition of MS as a cause of psychiatric syndromes is crucial for timely diagnosis and treatment.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurology
    • Psychiatry

    Background:

    • Multiple sclerosis (MS) can manifest with diverse psychiatric symptoms.
    • Depressive and dissociative disorders are among the common initial presentations.

    Observation:

    • Case 1: A patient with years of depressive and hysterical symptoms was diagnosed with MS.
    • Case 2 & 3: Patients presented with dissociation and major depression as early signs of MS.

    Findings:

    • Psychiatric symptoms can precede or mimic neurological deficits in MS.
    • Delayed diagnosis of MS is common when psychiatric manifestations are the primary concern.

    Implications:

    • Increased awareness of MS in psychiatric differential diagnoses is essential.
    • Early neurological workup for unexplained psychiatric syndromes may improve MS detection.
    • This highlights the need for interdisciplinary collaboration between neurologists and psychiatrists.
