Objective physical activity, like walking, is linked to higher morale in older adults. Promoting daily movement, even light activity, may boost well-being in seniors.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology
- Behavioral Science
- Public Health
Background:
- Objective measurement of physical activity (PA) and its relation to well-being in older adults is under-researched.
- Existing studies often lack objective measures or focus on general populations, not specific geriatric well-being indicators.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between objectively measured everyday physical activity and sedentary behavior with morale in adults aged 80 and older.
- To utilize a morale measure specifically designed for the geriatric population.
Main Methods:
- Seventy-seven participants (mean age 84.3 years) wore accelerometers for at least 5 days to objectively measure physical activity and sedentary behavior.
- Morale was assessed using the Philadelphia Geriatric Center Morale Scale (PGCMS).
Main Results:
- Higher PGCMS scores (indicating better morale) were significantly associated with increased daily steps and time spent stepping.
- Stepping at higher intensities (>75 steps per minute) also showed a positive correlation with morale.
- No significant association was found between sedentary behavior and PGCMS scores.
Conclusions:
- Objectively measured physical activity, particularly walking and upright posture, is positively associated with morale in older adults.
- Promoting walking or simply standing may be beneficial for geriatric morale, suggesting a potential bidirectional relationship.
- Further research could explore the causal pathways between physical activity and morale in the elderly.

The Role of Exercise in Stress Management
Regular physical activity is essential for reducing stress and promoting cardiovascular health. Research shows that adults who exercise regularly have nearly half the...
