    Summary

Cloistered religious communities experienced low COVID-19 infection and death rates during France's first confinement. Strict adherence to preventive measures in monasteries contributed to these favorable outcomes, contrasting with higher rates in nursing homes.

    Area of Science:

    • Epidemiology
    • Gerontology
    • Infectious Disease Control

    Background:

    • The COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately impacts the elderly and individuals with risk factors.
    • Nursing homes (EHPADs) were severely affected, but data on cloistered religious communities remained unknown.
    • These communities often house elderly populations, making them potentially vulnerable.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the incidence of COVID-19 among members of religious orders in cloistered monasteries during the initial French lockdown.
    • To investigate the preventive strategies implemented within these monastic communities.

    Main Methods:

    • A questionnaire survey was distributed to cloistered monasteries across three French regions.
    • Data collection occurred between July 25 and August 25, 2020.
    • The survey focused on infection and mortality rates and specific prevention measures (community life, external travel, visitor reception).

    Main Results:

    • Out of 724 individuals in 34 monasteries, only 25 (3.5%) were infected, with 3 deaths (0.4%).
    • Infection and mortality rates were lower than those reported in nursing homes (EHPADs) during the same period.
    • Preventive measures, including those for community living, travel, and visitors, were rigorously followed by all members.

    Conclusions:

    • Cloistered religious communities demonstrated significantly lower COVID-19 mortality compared to nursing homes during the first confinement.
    • The strict adherence to and effectiveness of implemented preventive measures were key factors in mitigating the impact of the virus within these communities.
