    Summary

This study found that biennial chest X-rays, initially for tuberculosis control, did not significantly reduce lung cancer mortality in males under 70. Screening did not alter lung cancer death risk.

    Area of Science:

    • Public Health
    • Epidemiology
    • Oncology

    Background:

    • Tuberculosis screening programs utilizing chest X-rays were common.
    • The potential impact of these programs on lung cancer mortality was not well-established.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the effectiveness of a biennial chest X-ray screening program in reducing lung cancer mortality.
    • To assess the association between chest X-ray screening and lung cancer risk.

    Main Methods:

    • A case-control study design was employed.
    • 130 male lung cancer deaths (cases) and 260 age-matched controls were analyzed.
    • Exposure was defined as at least one chest X-ray within two years prior to diagnosis.

    Main Results:

    • The proportion of individuals who underwent screening was similar between cases and controls (76% vs. 78% and 75%).
    • The relative risk of lung cancer death associated with screening was not significantly different from 1 (0.9 and 1.1).
    • No trend in risk was observed based on the number of screenings or time since the last screening.

    Conclusions:

    • Biennial chest X-ray screening, as part of a tuberculosis control program, did not demonstrate a significant impact on lung cancer mortality.
    • Current screening practices may not effectively reduce lung cancer mortality in the studied population.
