Anatomy of the Brain: Ventricles

4.8K
There are hollow fluid-filled cavities known as ventricles deep inside the human brain. There are two lateral ventricles, one in each cerebral hemisphere, and each has three different projections — the anterior, inferior, and posterior horns visible from the lateral side. A thin membrane called the septum pellucidum separates the two lateral ventricles. The slender third ventricle in the diencephalon is connected to each lateral ventricle via a channel called the interventricular foramen.

Summary

Superficial siderosis, a condition of iron deposition in the brain, can cause hearing loss and gait issues. Treatment with deferiprone showed moderate symptom improvement but no MRI changes in this case.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Radiology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Superficial siderosis involves chronic hemosiderin deposition in the central nervous system, often diagnosed via MRI.

  • It results from slow blood leakage into the subarachnoid space, with infratentorial and cortical types.
  • Cerebellar-predominant superficial siderosis can manifest as hearing loss, gait disturbance, and muscle weakness.
