Persistent loneliness in midlife is linked to cognitive decline and brain structure changes, particularly in memory and executive function areas. Reducing chronic loneliness may lower the risk of age-related cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Conclusions:
- Persistent midlife loneliness is associated with brain atrophy in regions critical for memory and executive functions.
- Interventions targeting the chronicity of loneliness may help mitigate the risk of age-related cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease.
