Nursing Assessment of the Genitourinary System I: Health History01:21

Nursing Assessment of the Genitourinary System I: Health History

70
The genitourinary system is critical to maintaining fluid balance, waste elimination, and reproductive function. Nurses play a vital role in assessing this system, beginning with a thorough health history. This process involves gathering patient information, identifying risk factors, and recognizing symptoms of genitourinary disorders. Early detection is vital for timely interventions and management.1. Disorders of the Urinary System01:20

Disorders of the Urinary System

447
The urinary system is responsible for eliminating waste and excess fluids from the body. However, disorders of the urinary system can arise due to various reasons like infections, stress, age, congenital abnormalities, and lifestyle.
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common urinary system disorders. They are caused by bacteria that enter the urethra and can spread to the bladder resulting in cystitis. Pyelonephritis is the result of a UTI that has ascended to the level of the...

Urinary Bladder01:23

Urinary Bladder

1.3K
The urinary bladder is a hollow, muscular sac that temporarily stores urine before it is expelled from the body. It can hold approximately 600 mL of urine prior to micturition. The bladder is retroperitoneal and located behind the pubic symphysis in the pelvic floor.
In males, the bladder is situated in front of the rectum, while in females, it is positioned anterior to the vagina and uterus. The bladder floor contains an inverted triangular area called the trigone, defined by the two ureteric...

The Micturition Reflex01:26

The Micturition Reflex

953
Urination, or micturition involves the coordination of the bladder's detrusor muscle and two sphincters to ensure controlled bladder emptying.
The process begins with bladder filling, where the bladder wall stretches as urine accumulates. This stretching activates the urine storage reflex, mediated by the sacral spinal segments and the pontine storage center. Efferent sympathetic impulses stimulate the detrusor muscle to relax and the internal urethral sphincter to contract, facilitating...

Disorders of the Autonomic Nervous System

789
The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is an intricate network of nerves that controls functions such as the regulation of heart rate, digestion, and blood pressure regulation. When this system malfunctions, it can lead to various disorders that affect multiple bodily functions. One common feature of many autonomic disorders is the involvement of smooth blood vessels, which play a crucial role in regulating blood flow throughout the body.

Autism Spectrum Disorder01:19

Autism Spectrum Disorder

191
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.
These core symptoms manifest differently among individuals, ranging from mild to severe. The disorder's complexity extends beyond its clinical presentation, encompassing a diverse range of biological, cognitive, and sociocultural influences.

Summary

Overactive bladder is linked to many unmet social needs, including housing instability and food insecurity. Addressing these social determinants of health can improve care for individuals with overactive bladder.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Social Epidemiology
  • Urology

Background:

  • Social determinants of health significantly influence health outcomes.
  • Overactive bladder (OAB) is a prevalent condition in the U.S. with substantial public health implications.
  • Understanding the link between social conditions and OAB is crucial for effective management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between overactive bladder and unmet social needs.
  • To assess the impact of social determinants on OAB prevalence in a large patient sample.

Main Methods:

  • A community-based sample of 3,617 adults completed electronic questionnaires.
  • Data collected included clinical information, urinary symptoms, and social needs.
  • Multivariable logistic regression analyzed the association between OAB and unmet social needs.

Main Results:

  • 38.5% of participants had overactive bladder (OAB).
  • OAB was significantly associated with numerous unmet social needs: housing instability, food insecurity, utility concerns, transportation barriers, missed medical appointments, legal issues, relationship stress, plumbing problems, and lack of social support.
  • These associations remained significant after adjusting for covariates.

Conclusions:

  • Multiple unmet social needs are strongly associated with overactive bladder.
  • Healthcare providers should screen for and address social determinants of health in OAB patients.
  • Integrating social needs assessment into OAB care may improve patient outcomes.
