    Summary

    Port-wine stains result from abnormal blood vessel growth, linked to a loss of sympathetic nerves. This nerve damage impairs blood flow regulation, causing the characteristic vascular ectasia in these lesions.

    Background:

    • Port-wine stains (PWS) are congenital vascular malformations.
    • PWS exhibit progressive ectasia of superficial vascular plexuses.
    • Recent research indicates a significant reduction in nerves within PWS lesions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the role of nerve loss in the pathogenesis of port-wine stains.
    • To determine if the observed nerve deficit is of autonomic (sympathetic) origin.
    • To understand how impaired neurovascular regulation contributes to PWS progression.

    Main Methods:

    • Histological examination of PWS tissue.
    • Immunohistochemical analysis for nerve markers.
    • Assessment of vascular structure and nerve density.
