This study found that while Riyadh residents have high knowledge of emergency departments (EDs), many still overutilize them for non-urgent issues. Improving primary healthcare access is recommended to reduce unnecessary ED visits.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Health Services Research
- Epidemiology
Background:
- Efficient emergency department (ED) utilization is crucial for healthcare planning.
- Public concerns exist regarding emergency room (ER) usage patterns.
- Understanding public knowledge and attitudes towards EDs is essential.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess knowledge and attitudes of the Saudi Arabian population in Riyadh regarding emergency department (ED) use.
- To investigate public concerns and reasons for emergency room (ER) visits.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional study was conducted in Riyadh City, Saudi Arabia, in 2020.
- Data was collected from 440 respondents using a self-administered questionnaire.
- Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 23.0.
Main Results:
- 22 symptoms, ranging from acute to cold-related, were cited as reasons for ER visits.
- 45.7% of participants visited the ER when sick, compared to primary care (28.2%), online consultation (17.5%), and community pharmacy (8.6%).
- Participants demonstrated a high level of knowledge regarding EDs, with significant differences observed based on marital status and age group (24-29 years).
Conclusions:
- Findings highlight characteristics linked to population knowledge and ED overutilization.
- Limited medical resources in Riyadh's primary health care centers (PHCCs) contribute to the issue.
- Recommendations include improving the primary health care (PHC) admission process with a triage mechanism to ensure appropriate patient care location.

Assessment of apical radial pulse
The A-R pulse assessment involves simultaneous evaluation of the apical and radial pulses. When the apical and radial pulse rates vary, this assessment helps identify a pulse deficit.
