Summary

The single-incision round block technique for breast cancer surgery is as safe and effective as the traditional two-incision method for sentinel lymph node (SLN) retrieval. This approach offers oncological safety and is suitable for tumors in all breast quadrants.

Area of Science:

  • Surgical Oncology
  • Breast Cancer Treatment
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery

Background:

  • Breast-conserving surgery (BCS) is a standard treatment for breast cancer.
  • Sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy is crucial for staging.
  • Minimizing surgical incisions can improve patient outcomes and cosmesis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the feasibility of a single-incision round block technique for BCS with SLN retrieval.
  • To compare oncological safety and outcomes with the standard two-incision approach.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective observational case-control study (January 2017 - October 2021).
  • Group A: BCS with SLN retrieval via single round-block incision.
  • Group B: Conventional BCS with separate axillary incision for SLN retrieval.

Main Results:

  • 97.7% SLN retrieval success rate in the single-incision group (Group A).
  • No significant differences in reintervention rates, complications, resection margins, or recurrence.
  • Higher rates of axillary neuralgia and skin retraction in the two-incision group (Group B).

Conclusions:

  • The single-incision round block technique is a safe and effective alternative for BCS and SLN retrieval.
  • This method achieves comparable oncological safety to the standard two-incision approach.
  • The technique is applicable for tumors located in all breast quadrants.
