The knee joint is the most complicated joint in the body. It consists of three articulations– two tibiofemoral and one patellofemoral. As is characteristic of synovial joints, the knee joint has a thin articular capsule that partially surrounds this joint cavity. Knee braces, both hard and soft, do not impact performance in healthy individuals during the Back in Action (BIA) test battery. Athletes can return to sports without concern for brace-related performance disadvantages.

Background:

  • Knee orthotics are frequently used to support knee function.
  • The impact of knee orthotics on dynamic performance in healthy individuals remains unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effect of hard and soft knee orthotics on the Back in Action (BIA) test battery performance in healthy participants.

Main Methods:

  • A single-blind, randomized controlled crossover pilot trial was conducted.
  • Twenty-four healthy participants performed a BIA test battery (balance, vertical jumps, parkour hop) with a rigid orthotic, soft brace, or no aid.
  • Repeated measures ANOVA and Friedman Test were used for data analysis.

Main Results:

  • No significant or clinically relevant differences in BIA test performance were observed between using a soft brace, rigid orthosis, or no aid (p = 0.53–0.97).
  • No adverse events were reported during the study.

Conclusions:

  • Soft and rigid knee braces do not appear to affect performance in healthy individuals.
  • Lack of prior experience with the devices may influence feedback mechanisms.
  • Healthy participants can expect no performance disadvantage when returning to sports with knee braces.
