Background:

Integrating multiple functionalities into compact devices presents a significant challenge in the terahertz (THz) band.
Existing THz devices often lack reconfigurability and multifunctionality within a single unit structure.

Purpose of the Study:

To propose and demonstrate an optically-controlled multifunctional linear polarization conversion metasurface for terahertz applications.
To enable independent control of reflection and transmission polarization conversion using external optical stimuli.

Main Methods:

Design of a multilayer metasurface incorporating photosensitive semiconductors (Germanium and Silicon).
Utilizing pump light of varying wavelengths and intensities to alter semiconductor states and control polarization conversion.
Analysis of the working principle through eigenmode theory and surface current distribution simulations.

Main Results:

Achieved broadband reflection polarization conversion with a relative bandwidth of 102.4%.
Achieved broadband transmission polarization conversion with a relative bandwidth of 98.9%.
Demonstrated tunability of device efficiency by adjusting pump light intensity and wavelength.

Conclusions:

The proposed metasurface offers a facile method for manipulating multifunctional devices in the terahertz spectrum.
The design showcases the potential of photosensitive semiconductors for dynamic control of polarization conversion.
The study confirms the stability of the metasurface against variations in structural parameters and incident angles.
