Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the primary motivations of medical students.
  • To assess student satisfaction with the problem-based learning (PBL) curriculum.
  • To understand post-graduation plans of medical students.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted at Batterjee Medical College, Jeddah.
  • Data was collected via questionnaires from first-year to internship students.
  • The study period was from January to March 2021.

Main Results:

  • Service to humanity (50%) was the main reason for choosing medicine, followed by financial reasons (18.8%).
  • 75.9% of students chose medicine as their own choice.
  • 69.6% preferred the PBL curriculum over traditional methods.
  • 37.5% planned residency in Saudi Arabia, with general surgery being the most preferred specialty (29.5%).

Conclusions:

  • Altruism is the predominant factor influencing students' decisions to enter medical college.
  • Medical students show a preference for PBL curricula and plan to pursue further training within Saudi Arabia.
