Background:

  • Nesfatin-1 is implicated in metabolism, appetite, and eating behaviors.
  • Dysregulation of nesfatin-1 is hypothesized to contribute to eating disorders like anorexia nervosa.
  • Functional hypothalamic amenorrhea (FHA) is a condition characterized by the absence of menstruation due to hypothalamic dysfunction.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role and concentration of nesfatin-1 in patients diagnosed with FHA.
  • To compare nesfatin-1 levels in FHA patients with those in healthy controls.
  • To explore correlations between nesfatin-1 levels and clinical parameters in FHA.

Main Methods:

  • 147 patients with FHA and 88 healthy controls were enrolled.
  • Serum samples were analyzed for hormones (LH, FSH, estradiol, prolactin, TSH, fT4, cortisol, DHEA-S, testosterone), glucose, insulin, and nesfatin-1.
  • Nesfatin-1 concentrations were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).

Main Results:

  • Patients with FHA exhibited significantly lower serum nesfatin-1 concentrations compared to healthy controls (p=0.005).
  • No significant difference in nesfatin-1 levels was observed between FHA patients with normal versus decreased BMI.
  • Serum nesfatin-1 showed a positive correlation with 17-β-estradiol and negative correlations with age, fasting glucose, and HDL levels.

Conclusions:

  • This is the first study to report nesfatin-1 concentrations in the context of clinical FHA.
  • Decreased serum nesfatin-1 levels are associated with FHA.
  • These findings may offer new insights for managing FHA patients.
