    Background:

    • Leuconostoc oenos is a species of lactic acid bacteria.

    • To investigate the presence and characteristics of plasmids in Leuconostoc oenos strains.
    • To report the first instance of extrachromosomal DNA in this species.

    • Plasmid DNA was extracted and analyzed from Leuconostoc oenos strains.

    • Eleven plasmids were successfully isolated from eight Leuconostoc oenos strains.
