    Summary

    Estrogen binding in pregnant rat livers significantly decreases during gestation, even with increased liver weight. This reduction in estrogen receptors cannot fully explain pregnancy-induced hypertriglyceridemia.

    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate changes in estrogen binding in the liver of pregnant rats.
    • To determine if alterations in hepatic estrogen receptors correlate with hypertriglyceridemia during gestation.

    Main Methods:

    • Quantification of estrogen binding in rat liver tissue.
    • Measurement of estrogen binding in picomoles per milligram of protein.
    • Comparison of binding levels between pregnant and control rats at different gestational stages.

    • A marked decrease in estrogen binding per milligram of protein was observed on days 12 and 21 of gestation compared to controls.

    • Further mechanisms likely contribute to the metabolic adaptations of pregnancy.
