Social Scripts02:10

Social Scripts

9.6K
People tend to know what behavior is expected of them in specific, familiar settings. A script is a person’s knowledge about the sequence of events expected in a specific setting (Schank & Abelson, 1977). Essentially, scripts are a particular kind of schema, one containing default values for the features within an event. In the restaurant example, the script's features include the props (e.g., tables, menu, food, and money), the roles to be played (e.g., customer and waiter),...

Sexually Transmitted Infections01:26

Sexually Transmitted Infections

403
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are diseases transmitted primarily through unsafe sexual interactions. Bacteria, viruses, or parasites cause them and can result in severe health complications if untreated.ChlamydiaThe bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis is responsible for the disease Chlamydia, the most common STI in the United States. This peculiar pathogen requires human cells to reproduce, residing intracellularly. The initial infection often goes unnoticed because it typically does not...

Male Sexual Response: Erection & Ejaculation

4.2K
Sexual stimulation can take various forms, such as physical touch and visual or auditory cues. When this happens, the parasympathetic reflex in the sacral portion of the spinal cord is activated. This reflex stimulates the release of nitric oxide (NO), which then dilates the arterioles in the penis, increasing blood flow to the erectile tissues - the corpora cavernosa and corpus spongiosum.
The blood filling the erectile tissues compresses the veins, which helps to prevent blood from leaving...

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Trauma Studies
  • Clinical Research

Background:

  • Idiographic script-driven imagery is central to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) research and treatment, particularly for survivors of sexual assault.
  • Existing idiographic techniques may benefit from complementary or alternative methods.
  • Standardized narratives offer a controlled approach to studying trauma responses.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate multimodal responses to a standardized audio-recorded sexual assault narrative.
  • To compare reactions to a standardized sexual assault narrative versus a non-traumatic control narrative.
  • To assess the utility of standardized narratives as a cue presentation method in PTSD research and treatment.

Main Methods:

  • 105 women were recruited from the community.
  • Participants were randomly assigned to listen to either a standardized sexual assault narrative (trauma condition) or a non-sexual assault narrative (control condition).
  • Emotional and physiological responses (anxiety, anger, disgust, distress, heart rate) were measured before, during, and after the audio recordings.

Main Results:

  • Participants in the trauma condition reported significantly greater increases in anxiety, anger, and disgust compared to the control group.
  • Distress levels were higher across the duration of the recording in the sexual assault narrative group.
  • No significant differences in heart rate were observed between the trauma and control conditions.

Conclusions:

  • Listening to a standardized sexual assault narrative effectively elicits negative affect and distress.
  • Standardized narratives show potential as a method for cue presentation in trauma-focused interventions for PTSD.
  • This approach may enhance the study of reactions to sexual assault cues in clinical and research settings.
