Uterine Tubes01:16

Uterine Tubes

917
The uterine or fallopian tubes function as the conduit through which oocytes travel from the ovaries to the uterus. Each fallopian tube measures approximately 10 to 13 cm long and is anatomically divided into the infundibulum, ampulla, isthmus, and interstitial part (or intramural segment). The infundibulum is characterized by its funnel shape and features extensions called fimbriae which reach towards the peritoneal cavity. These fimbriae play a critical role during ovulation as they extend...

Uterus and Cervix

1.9K
The uterus, commonly called the womb, is a vital reproductive organ in females designed to provide a nurturing environment for the implantation and growth of an embryo. It is shaped like a hollow pear and positioned between the urinary bladder and the rectum. The uterus's structure allows it to support and protect a developing fetus throughout pregnancy.
The uterus is securely anchored within the pelvic cavity by paired broad ligaments on either side. It is further stabilized by three pairs...

Mitral Valve Prolapse II: Assessment and Management

39
IntroductionA range of clinical features characterizes Mitral Valve Prolapse (MVP), but it is important to note that many individuals with MVP are asymptomatic and may remain so throughout their lives. For those who do exhibit symptoms, the following are the key clinical features:Palpitations: This is a common symptom where individuals feel an irregular or rapid heartbeat. Palpitations in MVP are often due to arrhythmias such as premature ventricular contractions or supraventricular...

Mitral Valve Prolapse III: Nursing Management

31
The nursing management of Mitral Valve Prolapse, or MVP, centers around patient education, symptom monitoring, and lifestyle modifications.Patient Education on MVP Diagnosis and Heredity: Nurses should provide comprehensive education about MVP, a condition where the mitral valve does not close appropriately during heartbeats. This education often includes the condition's pathophysiology, symptoms, and potential complications, like arrhythmias or mitral regurgitation. Though not fully...

Mitral Valve Prolapse I: Introduction

32
IntroductionThe mitral valve, one of the heart's four valves, regulates blood flow. These valves have flaps that open and close to direct blood properly through the heart and body. During each heartbeat, the flaps open for blood to pass through and seal shut to prevent backflow. Specifically, the mitral valve opens to allow blood flow from the heart's upper left chamber to the lower left chamber. It then closes securely as the lower left chamber contracts to pump blood to the body, preventing...

Area of Science:

  • Gynecologic Oncology
  • Surgical Pathology

Background:

  • Vaginal leiomyomas are exceptionally rare gynecologic tumors.
  • Diagnosis and management are complicated by vaginal anatomy and tumor rarity.

Observation:

  • A 48-year-old female presented with a vaginal mass and urinary incontinence.
  • MRI revealed a 65x46 mm anterior vaginal wall tumor.
  • Intraoperative frozen-section analysis was crucial for diagnosis.

Findings:

  • The vaginal tumor was successfully resected via a transvaginal approach.
  • Pathological diagnosis confirmed the tumor as a leiomyoma.
  • The patient experienced an uncomplicated recovery.

Implications:

  • Intraoperative frozen-section analysis is recommended for vaginal wall tumors with concerning MRI findings.
  • Prompt surgical intervention post-diagnosis prevents misdiagnosis and ensures appropriate treatment.
  • This approach optimizes outcomes for rare vaginal neoplasms.
